Second-hand VS New Mobility Equipment — What to Watch Out For!

Choosing between pre-owned and brand new mobility equipment is a big decision. There’s no wrong answer — it all comes down to your budget, your needs, and how much you’ll be using it. Here’s what you need to know.

1. The Price — Saving Money vs. Getting Exactly What You Need

Pre-owned equipment can save you a significant amount, and you can often see and test it in person straight away rather than waiting for delivery. Mobility equipment also holds its value well, so you’re unlikely to feel short-changed.

Buying new means you can have everything tailored to you — seat size, armrests, colour, accessories. If your needs are specific, that flexibility is worth a lot.

2. Condition and Battery Life — Know What You’re Getting

Pre-owned equipment has had a previous life, so some wear is expected. Buying from a reputable dealer (rather than a private seller) gives you far more confidence in what you’re getting — and a regular service keeps everything running safely.

Worth knowing: newer models increasingly use lithium batteries with better range and faster charging. If you’re out and about daily, that upgrade can make a real difference.

New equipment arrives fresh, typically needs less maintenance early on, and is less likely to surprise you with an unexpected repair bill.

3. Your Rights as a Buyer — Really Important!

This one is often overlooked, but it matters.

When you buy from a registered business, you’re protected under the Consumer Rights Act 2015:

  • Within 30 days — faulty item? You’re entitled to a full refund.
  • Within 6 months — if a fault appears, the seller must repair, replace, or refund. You don’t have to prove the fault was there when you bought it.
  • After 6 months — you can still claim, but you’d need to show the fault existed at point of purchase.

Buying privately (through a classified ad or marketplace) means these protections largely don’t apply. Something to think carefully about when your mobility equipment is something you rely on every day.
